Luke Kanyang'areng

Luke Kanyang'areng, a nurse from West Pokot County, has been one of Kenya’s most inspiring frontline health workers.

Kanyang'areng has become known for his commitment to reaching patients in hard-to-access areas, often travelling long distances to deliver lifesaving care to patients.

Through his hard work, Kanyang'areng has reinforced primary healthcare delivery, supported immunisation drives, responded to disease outbreaks, and ensured vulnerable populations in the region receive timely medical attention.

Furthermore, he engages local communities through health education, empowering them with knowledge on hygiene, nutrition, maternal health, and disease prevention.

This year, he became the first Kenyan to receive the Human Rights and Nursing Award for his role in fighting for patients' rights across communities.

Kanyang'areng was honoured for his contributions to the advancement of human rights at the 2025 edition of the awards, which were held at the University of Turku in Finland.
